Where's the Report?
If anyone was wondering why there has not been any convention report for Wizard World Toronto Comic Con... well, I didn't go. That's why I haven't posted a report.
To be honest, and I really hope I don't offend anyone with what I write, the Guest List just wasn't enticing enough for me to: a) take time off of work, which would result in a loss of income, and b) spend money on and at this con. I did spend the weekend, working. Both at my job, and at Lucky Bamboo (my parents' restaurant).
With the changes to my collecting habits (as I mentioned back in November 2009), I'm trying to be more conservative with my spending habits. So for me, I was looking mainly at the guests from out of town, as the local guests, I can catch at another time, if I haven't already done so (and several times for many). Although I did want to see Adi Granov and Phil Jimenez (and hoped to get sketches from both of them, again), they just weren't enough for me to spend $25-30 on admission for a single day.
With Wizard acquiring the Paradise Toronto Comicon, I was hoping that this con would be boasting with comic guests, like Wizard used to. Like one or more headliners that I would have several books, or just significant books, to get signed. Stuff that, to me, I have to get signed (names like Mark Millar, Frank Miller, Garth Ennis, etc).
In addition to the headliner(s), have several out of town comic guests, like when Kevin Boyd was involved with Paradise Toronto Comicon, or like the Fan Appreciation Toronto ComiCON that Hobbystar puts on.
And in addition to those, have the great local creators, that I really hope are not offended with what I said. Have all of those, wrapped up into one convention, with possibly some celebrities (kind of like Fan Expo Canada).
To me, the Wizard World Toronto Comic Con was more targeted towards B- to D-List celebrities (with the exception to Jewel Staite, who is A-List to me!), retired and recently released wrestlers (though I would have liked to have met Kevin Nash, who seems to be the only active wrestler on TV, on that guest list), and reality TV "stars", that I just don't give a shit about.
Comic guests were there, but it seemed like Wizard just didn't give a shit about promoting them. Seriously, they promoted the Jigsaw doll from the SAW movies, the cardboard cutout of AC/DC, the Sherlock Holmes ads, but not the comic guests?
With TCAF and the Toronto ComiCON Fan Appreciation Event coming up, where at both cons, I will be able to catch several local creators, in addition to several out of town creators, and the almost guaranteed trip (that Danny and I will be making) to Motor City Comic Con this year, I opted to skip the this con. (That was one long sentence, with several commas... "Me fail English, that's unpossible" - Ralph Wiggum).
Again, I really hope I haven't offended anyone (especially the awesome local creators), by my comments. It just seems more cost effective for me to catch the local creators at conventions that I can also catch many out of town creators.
